TOP HALLOWEEN IDEAS FOR 2021

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

The spooky parties are already on our doorstep, and we have yet to decide how to approach them? Is the same old witch enough? Is there anything more sophisticated, that nobody else is going, to come up with? Let’s see what this Halloween is preparing for us.

Every year Halloween is pretty much a mixture of pop culture and classical spooky characters. So, probably if you watched at least 3 popular shows on Netflix you can already predict how 90% of the party will look like. Bridgeton-like dressed Ladies, Squid Game costumes and Chess Boards (Queen’s Gambit) will overflow the parties. The question is, how to get into that 10% of the most original and yet still recognizable characters.

For a girls’ party, try looking at some top fashion events. For example, Kim Kardashian’s look at Met Gala. Spooky, easy to make and yet stylish dress of black fabric will definitely surprise your friends. In the same direction, you can always look at some music videos that were trending this year. Think Harry Styles, Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj. These types of costumes are relatively easy to find in a simple store and customize to your liking.

When everybody else will be looking like they came from the set of the Squid Game, go with older shows. Sex in the City or How I Met Your Mother are still very recognizable and will work perfectly for group costumes.

There’s nothing wrong with getting inspired by your child’s favourite show. Or even a show you liked as a kid. Dressing up as Paw Patrol characters with your whole family can be even more fun than the party itself! Scooby-Doo, Postman Pat, Bob Ross, Totally Spice, Sponge Bob go all the way and recreate these famous creatures with your family, this will definitely be remembered till next Halloween.

Hair and Make-up are very powerful tools when creating animal inspired looks. These might not be the most original, but with all the fuzz around series and celebrities, they can often be forgotten. Draw some shapes around your eyes, and you can already look like a leopard, panda or a dear!

If you are not sure how to make an idea come true, bring it to Aleksandra. She can do Halloween makeup for the whole family in a couple of hours and make you stand out in the crowd.

HISTORY OF NAIL TECHNOLOGY

By | Beauty, Fashion | No Comments

The art of nail care, finds its roots thousands of years ago. For more than 5000 years, both men and women have managed to have well-kept nails, with the assistance of nail technicians.

In 3000 BC, the nail polish a person selected in China, actually reflected their social status, for an example, Royalty wore red and black to indicate their power, and authority. In Acient Egypt, from 5000 to 3000 BC, women would dye their nails with henna to indicate their social status and seductiveness. Women of the lower class wore pastel and neutral shades, while the upper classes wore deep, bright shades.

In Babylonia 3200 BC, men, not women, painted their nails with black and green kohl, an ancient cosmetic. To prepare for war, warriors of Babylon spent hours having their nails prepared, hair curled, and other similar beauty treatments.

The mid-1800s saw the opening of the first salons with nail technicians. With the ‘Sitts Method’ gaining popularity, women of all income levels began to take care of their nails and cuticles. Dr. Sitts, was a European podiatrist who adapted a dental tool for manicure purposes. Previous to this invention, people used acid, a metal rod, and scissors to shape and trim the nails.

During the 1920s, the art of nail care began to broaden in America and Europe, at around the same time the Simplex Manicuring Kit came into existence, with the kit consisting of nail polish, cuticle remover, nail whitener, an orange stick and an emery board. This kit provided an opportunity to aspiring women who longed to become nail technicians as, it offered them the opportunity to practice their skills at home.

The nail-care industry has been growing like never before ever since the invention of modern nail polish. In 2012, the United States witnessed a surging popularity of nail art, in the same year, a short nail-art documentary was released: “NAILgasm”. The film explored the growing trend of nail art, from women across the world to high-fashion runways.

What would the next innovation in nail care be? Leave your guess in the comments under this post, we would love to hear it!

Glow Concierge works with beauty, wellness and fitness providers around Switzerland. We entrust these people with an important mission – to provide a good first impression of the brand. How do we make sure then that these individuals get it right?

YOUR FIRST CONTACT

Our every partnership starts with a test appointment. Rosamund, the founder and CEO of Glow Concierge, created this brand first and foremost because SHE needed these services. Whichever provider you book, you can be sure she had a treatment with him/her before.

It is important to us that you receive only the best quality services. That’s why Rosamund not only tests the providers herself, but also tries to get a treatment with them once in a while to check if everything is according to Glow Concierge Standards.

YOUR SAFETY FIRST

Allowing strangers in your home can be a little nerve wracking. Glow Concierge possesses information about each provider at all times. In more than three years of our existence, there were no major incidents. One thing we always ask people who are still having reservations is, do you have someone who cleans for you? Do you often give this person a key? Are you often out when they are in your home? If the answer is yes to any of these questions then there’s no need to think any further!

PROVIDING THE SPA EXPERIENCE

Glow Concierge was created with an idea that you can combine the comfort of your home with the pleasure of being in a salon, leaving out all the unnecessary and somewhat frustrating parts like looking for a babysitter or searching for a parking spot.

All our providers receive Glow Concierge Towels, which you are very welcome to use! As soon as you’ve made yourself your drink of choice, you will be surrounded by fluffy white towels, and all the equipment you would normally find in a salon. Andrei even goes as far as to turn on a relaxing playlist during your massage.

PREGNANCY MASSAGE

By | Health, Massage | One Comment

Carrying a new life is a happy but challenging time for any woman, but it is not always stress free. We’ve talked with Joanne, a trained pregnancy massage specialist, about why she decided to learn this type of massage and which benefits it brings.

Prenatal massage is a technique very similar to the Swedish massage, which focuses on long, sweeping strokes, avoiding direct pressure on the body. This massage puts the needs of the future mother first, concentrating on the areas which are most swollen or sore. Pillows are often used for support, as the massage can also be done while lying on the side.

This is what Joanne says about the benefits:

“A pregnancy massage is so beneficial in many ways as firstly it helps you to relax and take some time out for yourself. This is really important for both you and your baby as your baby can feel if you are stressed, so the more relaxed you are, the more relaxed your baby will be.”

Joanne is a mother of two beautiful girls, so she definitely has experience with what a pregnant woman might need. When Joanne went through the whole process of her body changing, she decided to learn the pregnancy massage technique to help other women.

“Secondly, it has many benefits on your body by reducing tired swollen limbs especially the legs and feet and the blood flow is automatically increased, leaving you feeling refreshed and energized

Improved blood flow brings many benefits to the body. Releasing the tension in the nerves and muscles the massage helps blood circulate actively in the regions where it couldn’t before, reaching all the vital organs as well as your brain.

“I finish the treatment with a face and scalp massage, which again is so beneficial as there are many muscles in the face and head that are often neglected and can lead to tension headaches.”

If you can do one thing for yourself during your pregnancy- treat yourself to a massage because you are special and you deserve it!

HOW TO BEAT THE HOLIDAY WEIGHT GAIN

By | Fitness, Health, Home, Nutrition | 2 Comments

We’re almost three weeks into September – exactly the time when your mind has already forgotten all about your last vacation, but the body is left to sort out the consequences.

Whether you hopped on a flight to your favorite spot, or staycationed closer to home, we definitely all indulged in that extra bowl of pasta and glass of wine this summer. To get you back to feeling your tip top best, here are our weight loss tips.

  1. Drop the soda… and the wine. Get back to basics with the good stuff, water. Try drinking warm water eight times a day – it acts like a dishwasher for your digestive system, cleaning out all the gunk and toxins as it goes.
  2. Take a break from stress. Stress hormones are brilliant at storing fat! Great when we were cave people, but terrible for modern day weightloss. We want to reduce the body’s instinct to produce the stress hormone. When stress can’t be avoided, make sure you give your body a reset with something calming like a hot bath, restorative yoga or meditation.
  3. Bring back breakfast! As tempting as it is to skip a meal, its actually counterintuitive for losing weight. Having a healthy breakfast featuring protein, fiber and healthy fats will keep cravings and snacking at bay as it stabilises your blood sugar.
  4. Make home cooking fashionable again. This is fundamental for weight loss success. Not only does this control your portion sizes, but it means you know exactly what’s going into your meal. There’s no chance of hidden additives, non-organic ingredients or secret sugar.
  5. Move your body. Increasing your daily activity isn’t just about calories burnt – it helps manage stress and boost your mood. Getting in those sweaty work outs is amazing, but don’t forget to have fun. Dancing to your favorite songs is just as effective. Remember to have a little protein after your workout to aid muscle repair.

AUTUMN SKIN DRYNESS

By | Beauty, Health | No Comments

Is your skin experiencing a summer hangover? It often happens that, as the humidity of the air lowers in the autumn, the skin starts losing its fresh summer looks and becomes dry. In this article, we’ll see how we can help our skin adjust to the new cooler weather.

In autumn, not only our skin but also our bodies go through some adjustments. The immune system suddenly gets more factors to fight with and less support from the sun. Therefore, the skin barrier can get quite fragile, resulting in the increased sensitivity and dryness. Moreover, the “damaged” barrier can let more pollution and other external aggravators deeper into the skin – increasing the chances of inflammation and redness.

Here are some tips to help you reinforce your natural skin barriers:

1 CLEANSE

Life in the city is not easy on our skin. Even in Switzerland, you can find some pollutants that would eventually settle on the skin. Cleaning the natural dead cells as well as the accumulating “debris” ensures that none of your pores is open and ready to receive the next cream or serum. Cleansing cream or milk fitting to your skin type is a great choice to nurture the skin while cleaning it.

2 MOISTURIZE

Changing temperatures can exhaust and dry the skin. Moisturizing brings in that extra vitamins, oils and liquids that the skin might be missing. It’s important to remember to choose the moisturizer fitting to your skin type. Choose lighter creams if you tend to have oily skin. Vogue suggests “looking to ceramides and lipids to prevent moisture loss and retain hydration…”. Such moisturizers “create a layer over the skin and stop water escaping”

Creams with Vitamin C are also great for brightening dull-looking skin and hyaluronic acid for an instant hydration hit.

3 EXFOLIATE

Scrubbing is perfect for removing dead cells, improving blood flow and smoothening the skin. But don’t run to your favorite mechanical scrub yet. Your skin is already damaged by the weather, and strong rubbing is the last thing it needs right now. They will only create micro-tears and damage the natural barrier even more.

In autumn, go for some professional chemical scrubs with acids. Of course, great caution is needed while using acids. But they are perfect for polishing the skin and making it smooth. Lactic acid is a great chemical exfoliant, as it hydrates at the same time as exfoliating. And mandelic acid works great with acne-prone skin and fights inflammation.

It’s best to consult with a dermatologist or with your facial provider before going for acidic skincare. They can tell you what your skin needs and help find the products that may not be on the pharmacy’s shelves. It’s also crucial to use the right rebuilding products after exfoliating.

3 WEAR SPF EVERY DAY

If you don’t feel the sun it doesn’t mean it’s not shining. The damaging UV rays can reach you even if it’s not 30 degrees outside. Include a cream or oil with an SPF factor against UVA and UVB rays to protect yourself from micro ageing symptoms and skin cancer.

4 EAT HEALTHY

Our skin reacts to both outside and “inside” factors. Taking extra care of it while you feel stressed or don’t eat healthily is important. Autumn is a great season for eating fresh, local vegetables and fruits. Support your skin from the inside out, and maybe it’ll not react as aggressive to the changing temperatures.

A refreshing or highly moisturizing facial once a month can reinforce your skin barrier and keep it balanced. Our Providers know a great deal about skin products and can always consult you on your personal needs during the treatment.

MANICURE. KEEPING IT CHIC & CASUAL

By | Beauty, Fashion | No Comments

Nail art is controversial. Some can wear 3 cm extensions with flowers and crystals and some don’t even paint their nails and prefer natural. But is there a middle ground? Can you combine two or more colors and still look casual?

We’ve researched the feeds of the most influential nail artists all over the world to find calm, casual, every-day and yet chic and interesting nails.

5 COLOR COMBO. THE TRENDIEST OF ALL.

You’re probably thinking “what does the first photo have to do with casual?!” and you’re right. This artist used very bright colors to keep up with the summer trends. But we can always pick up this trend and give it an autumn look. Use darker shades of brown, orange, red or gray, and you’ve got yourself a perfect color-only nail art that ANY artist can do!

UNUSUAL SHAPES

Again, colors are completely up to you. Put some tape before applying the nail polish to make the lines perfectly straight and experiment. This easy and creative solution will definitely get some surprised gazes from your colleagues.

STRAIGHT LINES

Vertical, horizontal or curved – lines are always fun. Let your nail master use his/her imagination and just draw a couple across your finished manicure. It won’t take more than ten minutes, but will make your manicure look authentic and fun.

NOT YOUR REGULAR FRENCH

Artists have been playing with colors in French manicure this whole summer. From natural and white it suddenly went to black, red, rainbow – basically all the colors you could possibly imagine. Going into autumn you could take a basic white, black or nude as a base and add some red to it for an impactful look.

As you might have noticed, all the ideas in this post are very beginner-friendly. So if you’re doing your manicure at home or are not sure whether your nail artist can do some crazy art, we hope you can use any of them!

Our top nail masters Aleksandra and Laura are always open to your new ideas. Bring some designs with you, and they won’t stop until your nails look fabulous.

NEVER HAD A MASSAGE BEFORE?

By | Fitness, Health, Massage | No Comments

Many view massage therapy as unnecessary or a last resort in case of injury. Moreover, undressing and letting somebody touch your curves can often be the main reason for not getting a much-needed massage. These feelings result in people suffering through stiffness in the back or even impaired blood circulation for years.

The benefits of massage therapy are well known and do not really need repeating. The problem, however, lies in their underestimation as well as the unwillingness to see the preventative effects of massage. If you never had severe muscle pain, migraines or burnouts, it is easy to dismiss the necessity of treating your soul and body.

2021 American Massage Therapy Association

According to the American Massage Therapy Association, almost half of all massage consumers got their last treatment for health and wellness reasons, while the other major part needed the therapy to reduce stress and treat anxiety.

The chart above clearly demonstrates which symptoms drive Americans to discuss the possibility of massage treatment with their doctor. Most of these patients are experiencing muscle pain or migraines, which in most part could be avoided if only they used the massage as a preventative therapy.

WHERE TO START?

As odd as it sounds, getting your first massage can be stressful. The main thing to remember, however, is that all masseuses are people. They do their job just like any other person. Our clients often feel very surprised by the friendly and calm personalities of the providers. And this is exactly how it should be, as the main and only job of the masseuse is to make you feel at ease, almost as if you were lying in your bed at home. (Wait a second… with Glow Concierge it is actually the case😉)

For you first ever massage, treat yourself with a light Lymph Drainage Massage. It is aimed at stimulating the lymphatic system and improving the blood circulation. It is perfect for removing old blocks in your body and making you feel like a new person.

EFFECTS OF THE SUN ON ACNE-PRONE SKIN

By | Beauty, Health | One Comment

Living with acne is NOT easy. It’s a life full of trying to find out what’s good for you and what makes you look like a teenager going through puberty. In fact, many people believe the sun calms down their acne. But there’re also ones who are convinced sunlight is not good for their skin. So which one is it?

This article is only about the relationship between sunlight and acne-prone skin. To find out more about the general effects of the sun and the UV rays read this article.

Positive effects of the sun

As we get tanned it can often seem that the condition of the skin gets better. The blemishes are not seen as much and everybody’s happy. Speaking of being happy, when exposed to the sun our bodies produce serotonin – the “happy hormone”.

Sun radiation also has an anti-inflammatory effect. In the right amounts, it facilitates regeneration and repair. The need for protection from the UV rays makes our skin readjust and adapt to the changing conditions, which can often be beneficial.

It is quite easy to get distracted from your skin condition under these circumstances. The sun temporarily dries out our skin and it feels like the perfect effect. But what happens inside the skin?

Negative effects of the sun

So, you’re in a good mood, enjoying the warm days, forgetting to put the sunscreen on…. What can go wrong? Acne-prone skin is usually oily, meaning it produces too much sebum and overreacts in situations where normal skin would not. When exposed to too much sunlight even oily skin can get dry. In response to that the sebum-producing glands under the skin go into overdrive leading to blemishes.

It has also been proven that excess sun exposure can disturb the natural process of dead skin cells being shed. As a result, excess sebum does not find its way out and accumulates in the pores, creating camedones.

The bottom line

As good as it might seem in the beginning sun can be damaging for the skin. The anti-inflammatory effects do not last long and after they stop you really start seeing all those clogged pores and blemishes.

Sun protection is crucial for any kind of skin but even more so for the acne-prone one. We recommend choosing mineral-based sun protection, as it does not penetrate the skin, shielding it from the UV rays and not changing the pH levels.

Consulting a professional once a month can also be beneficial. Even a short visit for a cleansing facial can become filled with worthless advice on skincare and your personal needs.

HAVING A FALLING OUT WITH YOR ALL-TIME FAVOURITE SKINCARE? HERE’S WHY!

By | Beauty, Fashion | One Comment

Nowadays the supermarket shelves are busting with any number of colourful tubes and bottles of creams, serums, masks, tonics and everything else that is supposed to make our skin look better. Scrolling through the web or walking through the city, we see skincare brands promote their products as the ultimate problem solvers.

But do all of these products have the potential to make our skin shiny and young forever? Or is changing a necessity? And if yes, how often do we need to make that tough decision between this cream with a pretty label and that one that the friend recommended.

IT STOPPED WORKING!

Homo Sapiens have been learning to adapt to the environment for a long time now. This is how we survive and this is how our skin deals with the outside world too. So after all it should come as no surprise that it learns to adapt to your new cream too.

As soon as you put a new product on the surface of your skin, it experiences a shock. It reacts immediately and you can see some results shortly. But with time the “surprise” feelings fade, the skin learns to deal with the intruders and eventually comes to expect the new guests.

HOW OFTEN DO I NEED TO CHANGE

A skin cycle is a process during which a cell is born, matures slowly and then dies out. Its average duration is six weeks, so anything before that means that the cells haven’t had the chance to experience the whole range of effects from the skincare product.

If you just started using a product we suggest waiting for a full cycle to see the result before switching. It can also prove helpful to lead a journal. Writing down any changes in your skincare or nutrition or even moods can definitely prove helpful in identifying your personal skin reaction patterns.

PRODUCTS DO NOT ALWAYS MATCH

It can often be the case that your favourite cream is just not that into the new cleansing foam. Many products are aimed at changing the pH levels of the skin. That’s where the directions “for oily” or “for dry” skin are based on.

The pH of ‘normal’ skin is close to 5.5, while dry skin is more acid (pH < 5.5), and oily skin more alkaline (pH > 5.5).

Pay attention to the labels and pH levels of the product before choosing.

YOUR SKIN IS TOO THICK

Our body creates a natural protective layer of dead skin cells that shield us off the pollutants as well as the good creams we are trying to apply on it. Exfoliation is the key when it comes to skincare. A mechanical or chemical peeling once a month can assure all your expensive products get exactly where they are supposed to get.

PROFESSIONAL SOLUTIONS

Choosing truly YOUR skincare can be a headache, especially for dry or acne-prone skin. It is important to keep in mind that certain products can be too harsh and require you to take a break from them, while others might only start working after a couple of months of usage.

Consulting a cosmetologist or a beautician is always helpful in determining the right path for your skincare solutions. Even one session with a professional can redefine how you see your skincare routine.

PERIOD MYTH BUSTING

By | Fitness, Health, Nutrition | No Comments

MYTH#1 – You shouldn’t exercise on your period

FALSE

Exercising can actually help with decreasing any PMS symptoms you may be feeling, particularly before your period. Exercise can help with fatigue and mood swings and regular aerobic exercise may lesson these symptoms. Exercise also tends to alleviate cramps, headache, or back pain associated with your period. Plus, don’t forget about that natural endorphin high! Exercise can generally elevate your mood and give you that boost of energy you need during your period.

MYTH#2 – You shouldn’t get a massage while menstruating

FALSE

A massage can help relax the body when it comes to tackling your menstrual pain as you’ll likely experience a decrease in water retention, and a release of muscle tension. Keep in mind a massage does increase the blood flow around your body which means a massage may increase your menstrual flow for a day after the massage. But this isn’t always a bad thing! The increase in blood flow also has positive effects on menstruation and can help reduce cramps and back pain

MYTH#3 – You shouldn’t have sex during your period

FALSE

Don’t let your period put a halt on your sex life. You may feel more aroused during this time of the month. The release of endorphins during orgasms is also said to reduce PMS symptoms such as cramping and will certainly take your mind off any menstrual uncomforted. If that wasn’t enough to convince you, having sex may make your periods shorter. Muscle contractions during an orgasm push out the uterine contents faster. That could result in shorter periods.

Myth #4: You Can’t Get Pregnant During Your Period

FALSE

The facts are that although the chances are slim, it is possible to get pregnant if you have unprotected sex during your period, particularly if you have a shorter cycle. You’re most likely to get pregnant during ovulation, which happens about 14 days before your period starts. Yet every woman’s cycle length is different, and your cycle length can change monthly. If you have a short menstrual cycle, your risk of getting pregnant during your period is higher. Also consider that sperm can stay alive in your body for up to seven days. So, if you have a 22-day cycle and you ovulate soon after getting your period, there’s a chance you’ll be releasing an egg while sperm are still in your reproductive tract.

MYTH#5 – PMS isn’t real

FALSE

If anyone ever tries to tell you that PMS is all in your head, they are lying. PMS, or premenstrual syndrome, is the combination of symptoms you may experience leading up your period. These can include mood swings, feeling on edge, headaches, and spots (great!). Although medical professionals aren’t exactly sure what causes PMS, it’s definitely a real thing and is probably down to the fluctuation in your hormones leading up to your period. So next time you’re not feeling like your usual self, rest-assured it’s completely normal and okay for you to feel that way.

MYTH#6 – You shouldn’t swim when you’re on your period (especially in the ocean, as sharks will attack you)

FALSE

There is no reason whatsoever not to swim when you are on your period and what’s more it can help ease cramps (see Myth#1 above on exercise). As to being attacked by sharks: No No No …. While it’s true that a shark’s sense of smell is powerful and that menstrual fluid contains blood, there’s no scientific evidence that women swimming in the ocean while having their period are more likely to be bitten by a shark. Please enjoy a swim without fear of being a sharks breakfast.

MYTH #7 – Everyone knows when you’re on your period

FALSE

No one knows unless you choose to tell them! You don’t walk differently, look different or smell different. Menstruation is a natural healthy part of life. It is a normal bodily function. It is however common for women to feel self conscious about their period, but rest assured no one knows you are menstruating and your body’s functions are your own private business. It’s ok to be discreet and not talk about it if it makes you uncomfortable. That said you should not feel like you have to hide the fact that you are on your period, there is nothing dirty or shameful about menstruation. You might find it helps to be open about your period, particularly with people you trust. The bottom line is you are in control and you alone can decide who to share this with or not.

MYTH #8 – You cannot enjoy your life during “these days”

FALSE! Go out, do sports, organize spa days and party hard. Glow Concierge & Organic Mondays will be there to support you.

Glow Concierge would like to thank Organic Mondays for sharing this important information. Take part in our joint GIVEAWAY and win 200CHF worth of goodies from Glow Concierge and Organic Mondays.

DANGERS OF THE SUN

By | Beauty, Health, Travel | No Comments

It’s once again a rainy weekend. You’re sitting at home and struggling to find an activity that you can do indoors. And then, all of a sudden, the sun starts to shine – the clouds went away to give you the evening you were so hoping for. You put on the summer dress that was lying in the closet for a long time and, without further due, go out to enjoy the sun. What can possibly go wrong?

Most of us tend to think about sunscreen only when it comes to vacation or tanning on a beach, when, in fact, we should be using it every single day ( yes, even when there’s no sun). It’s widely known that overexposure to the UV rays can lead to skin cancer, but not many consider this danger to be real. Moreover, many scientists suggest that excessive sunlight is damaging for acne prone skin as well. Let’s first dig deeper into the UV rays and what they do.

There’re two types of the radioactive UV rays – UVA and UVB. The former are your tan-producing rays, that penetrate the skin deeply and influence pigmentation. These are the rays you should fear, as, even a short exposure, can already lead to the first signs of the premature photoaging. The UVA rays damage the dermis, which causes collagen and elastin to shrink and form wrinkles on the surface of the skin.

The UVB rays do not have such a dramatic effect on the aging process, as they generally reach only the upper levels of the skin. These rays are the ones to blame for sunburns.

After all, yes, sunlight helps us produce the happy hormone” serotonin and is vital in the vitamin D formation.  But it is important to remember that without an adequate protection you also get yourself exposed to the risks of skin cancer, photoaging and dry skin.

Using sunscreen as a part of your daily routine could help prevent the negative effects while still allowing for that vitamin and hormone production to happen. It can also happen that after a long sunny vacation, your tanned face feels dry and out of shape. Just one facial can suffice to reinforce the blood circulation and enrich the skin with vitamins. Be it our famous “Fingertip Facelift” from Eleftheria or “Therma Vital Mineral” facial from Andrei, we guarantee that you will shine from inside out after it.

Product tip: our partner Dermalogica has a line of spf products that not only protect you from the damaging UV rays, but also have antiaging and moisturising properties. Use our promocode glow5 to get a 5% DISCOUNT.

WHICH YOGA TYPE IS BEST FOR ME?

By | Fitness, Food for thought | One Comment

Chakra, Ayurveda, Nidra, Vinyasa, Tridosha – unless you studied Sanskrit, you probably have no idea how to get your head around so many types of yoga.

If you don’t have time to try all of these yoga types for your own, read this article and discover which one will cater to your personal needs.

VINYASA

Vinyasa Yoga, also referred to as “flow yoga”, is one of the most common practices in the world. Some translate Vinyasa as “to place in a special way”, meaning that it requires conscious movements from each and every part of our bodies.

The Flow Yoga is all about calm and balanced movement. Together with your breath you flow from one posture into another, constantly changing and yet remaining still.

No Vinyasa practice is ever the same. This yoga type is so intuitive and different for each individual that you can even start doing it on your own after a while.

It is best suited for those working office jobs or with the low-activity lifestyles. Vinyasa Yoga brings you back to movement while stretching all the limbs and bones of the body.

CHAKRA

In ancient Sanskrit Chakra means a spinning wheel. According to the yogic belief there are 7 of these wheels surrounding our physical body. They are responsible for the flow of life and energy through us.

Every Chakra is of special significance and regulates the way we experience reality through the different emotions, aspirations or fears.

Therefore, if even one of the spinning wheels becomes blocked, the whole mechanism gets impaired. This can lead to anxiety, lethargy, digestive or other health issues.

The focus of Chakra yoga is to locate the impaired or even blocked chakras and help you feel like yourself again. This is usually achieved by a combination of asanas, physical movements and meditation.

NIDRA

This practice is best suited for treating anxiety, insomnia and burnout symptoms, as it can be compared to a full 3hour sleep!

In Yoga Nidra you don’t need to freeze in uncomfortable poses for minutes, stretch, use muscle strenghth or do any kind of physical activity. You will start and finish the class lying on your mat.

The main goal of this session is to get you into a deep state of conscious sleep. Unlike meditation, where you normally observe your thoughts come and go, the yoga nidra sleep is the state of conscious dreaming while remaining awake.

Yoga nidra works with autonomic nervous system, which regulates the unconscious processes in our body, like heartbeat or breathing.

A recent study found that while both yoga nidra and meditation had the benefits of reducing stress, yoga nidra was more efficient in reducing anxiety.

AYURVEDA & TRIDOSHA

Practiced all over the world for more than 5000 years Ayurveda is one of the fundamental elements of the ancient Indian teachings. It literally translates as the science of life and well-being.

Ayurveda is based on the principle of three doshas – three pollutants in the human body. Each of these pollutants regulates our skin type, digestion patterns and many other aspects of who you are.

This practice recognizes that every individual has her/his own prevalent Dosha. The Ayurveda and Tridosha practitioners usually access the needs of their clients to develop a unique exercise routine.

This practice is somewhat similar to the flow yoga, with its continuous movements and breathing exercises, but is at the same time more personalized and directed at treating your own disbalances.

As you might have already noticed, yoga is not about getting your body into the perfect shape. Yoga is the science of mental and physical balance, of feeling who you are and what your body needs.

A personal class at your home is the perfect opportunity to dig in deeper into your feelings and discover the hidden imbalances within yourself.

LEARN BODY LOVE FROM CALLISTHENICS

By | Fashion, Fitness | No Comments

Callisthenics may sound like a fancy and complicated word but in reality, most of us are already doing it as a part of our workout routines. In short, callisthenics is a workout type oriented at working with your own bodyweight.

The name has Greek origins, where “Kàlos” means beauty and “Sthénos” means strength. Many callisthenics lovers suggest that this sport is the pure art of movement or the most natural exercise.

Callisthenics incorporates the elements of gymnastics but is mainly performed outdoors. It focuses on what your body can do rather than how it looks and the result – fit shape, defined muscles and a couple of gymnastic exercises you would never think you can do on top of that.

If you ever found yourself saying “I would never be able to perform a handstand”, callisthenics might prove you wrong. This exercise routine is mainly based on helping you achieve your wildest fantasies about what your body can do.

PHYSICAL BENEFITS

Let’s take a handstand as an example. This exercise engages arms, shoulders, the core and glutes aka. the most wanted muscle groups!

Callisthenics teaches you to use your body as an integrated unit, instead of just viewing it as groups of isolated muscles. Being able to balance the weight from hands to legs requires not only strength, but also coordination and balance.

A study looked at the benefits of callisthenics on male participants over an 8 week period. The posture, strength and body composition accessed and measured through the before/after comparison of the participants’ abilities. In the end, the men demonstrated a significant body weight loss and posture improvement. They were also better at doing push-ups and pull-ups which indicated the increase in general body strengths.

MENTAL BENEFITS

Many people judge the success of their workout routine by their appearance, but as we already mentioned, callisthenics is not about that. Instead of having to look at your abs after every workout, you test your abilities with each exercise. For example, can you make the push-up better today compared to how you performed yesterday.

This kind of tracking can bring lots of fulfillment and motivation to work harder. And as soon as you master that handstand for the first time, you will get that enormous feeling of joy and would not want to stop for a second.

To sum up, callisthenics is a captivating art of working with your own body, feeling it and taking care of it. This workout teaches you patience, resilience and love for who you are.

With Dan you get a 50% discount on your first callisthenics session! Try it out, and you will not want to stop.

CUPPING IS ALWAYS IN FASHION

By | Fashion, Fitness, Massage | 2 Comments

Cupping is a massage technique that has been used by numerous celebrities over the years. How do we know? The marks.

The trend first started about a decade ago, when athletes at the Olympics and TV-stars started showing up in the public with colorful circles on their backs. Among the cupping therapy lovers are Victoria Beckham, Lady Gaga, Kim Kardashian and many others.

So what is it about cupping that makes us put up with this colourful after effect. Cupping is an ancient massage therapy first used by the people of China and Egypt. Some suggest that it was used to suck out the venom of poisonous snakes, but it soon became clear that there are way more benefits behind it.

A traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner Ada Ooi in her interview to Vogue states that cupping “… brings in oxygen and nutrients, guides immune cells into the area to loosen tension, and enhances qi [life force] flow in order to aid recovery and healing”

This incredible therapy does not only bring so much good into the body, it also helps flush out toxins. Yes, our body does have its own mechanisms to eliminate the build up of waste. However, modern lifestyle makes it too much for our natural systems. That’s where cupping comes into action. According to Ooi, “It creates broken blood vessels just beneath the skin, breaking up adhesions that are blocking the flow of qi and nutrients to different parts of the body”.

So why has cupping become more popular than a regular deep tissue massage? Some suggest that it’s because of the immediate effects not just on the body but also on your psyche. The unblocked blood vessels and improved oxygen and nutrient flow works well to ensure your whole body feels well.

Glow Concierge has a few cupping gurus of its own. Eleftheria and Alexandra have many years experience in massage therapy and, on top of that, a calming, friendly personality.

Trying this incredible massage technique out has now become even easier. Open glowconcierge.ch in your browser, choose from Cupping or Facial Cupping from Eleftheria and wait for your provider to knock on your door.

WHY LOVE YOGA

By | Fitness, Food for thought, Health | One Comment

Most of us are well-informed about the benefits of yoga. We associate this activity with healthy lifestyle, flexibility and mental well-being. But sometimes it seems so hard to force ourselves to do it. If you are one of those people who think “Yoga is not for me”, here are some good news! YOGA IS FOR EVERYONE.

Let’s first reexamine some of the benefits in comparison to other physical exercises.

There’s a tremendous amount of research confirming that certain yoga types can improve health through down-regulation of hypothalamic– pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis and the sympathetic nervous system (SNS). These two systems are the main responders to stress in our bodies. Therefore, the more often there’s a need for them to work, the more disbalanced your body’s response to triggers gets. This dysfunction then leads to obesity, diabetes, autoimmune disorders, depression, substance abuse, and cardiovascular disease.

Yoga has immediate effects on stress hormones and increase of natural killer cells. Studies even suggest that it reverses the impact of stress on the immune system. Moreover, you can actually feel the change, as yoga has also been shown to decrease anxiety and increase feelings of emotional, social and spiritual well-being.

Many studies have compared the effects of yoga and other physical activities such as fitness, stretching, walking, running or dancing. And, while the results on blood sugar reduction were similarly positive, yoga has been shown to have much greater benefits on the psyche.

In most of these comparisons yoga has been shown to be as effective as or superior to exercise on nearly every outcome measured.

The research conducted on women in labor or experiencing menopause confirmed the ease of the symptoms as well. While the pregnant women practicing yoga experienced an increase in maternal comfort and shortened labor time, the occurrence of hot flashes for menopausal participants reduced significantly.

COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT YOGA

Time Consuming

A lot of people who have never practiced yoga believe that it is really hard to choose a studio, yoga type, instructor or the time to start. However, they forget that the main focus of any yoga type is to bring balance to one’s life. It doesn’t matter if you start with Asana Yoga or Ayurveda, your instructor is going to focus on your specific needs.

Thus, all you need to do is click on “Book an Appointment” at glowconcierge.ch and your instructor will come straight to your door and care for a smooth start in your yoga journey.

Women’s thing

Surveys show that men can feel uncomfortable in yoga classes, either because they are surrounded by women or because they do not feel comfortable doing some exercises. Other than that, it is a common belief that if an exercise does not include weight lifting or enormous calorie burn, it is not worth doing.

But as we have mentioned earlier, yoga has many benefits on your general well-being. A skinny, exhausted figure is not a guarantee that you won’t get burned out the next day.

The bottom line is that everybody, men or women, want to stay healthy and yoga is an easy solution for that.

Doesn’t burn enough calories

Maybe yoga will not burn as many calories as an hour of running on a treadmill. But it has been shown that people who practice yoga tend to make healthier nutrition choices. Combine this fact with the lowered stress and blood sugar levels, and here you’ve got all the calories you would have burned doing something else.

Yoga is boring

This one is a classical fear of people willing to start yoga. They view it as standing in one position for 10 minutes without anything to do. However, yoga offers a huge variety of exercises oriented at different muscle groups at once. After all, in 3000 years of existence of yoga there must have been developed some exciting exercises.

To sum up, yoga does not only improve physical and  psychological conditions, but is also a great relaxation technique. It engages many muscle groups while keeping your mind at peace at all times. If you are suffering from lower back pain, cardiovascular disease or experiencing stress, yoga is exactly what you need.

We always test the providers before they start to work with us. So you can be 100% sure that the person who comes to your home has the friendliest personality and is well qualified. If you still haven’t fallen in love with yoga, let them help you make the first step.

THE PLANK TO EASE LOWER BACK PAIN

By | Fitness, Health | One Comment

Everyone knows the plank, not many people love the plank! It strengthens the core muscles involved in ‘anti extension’ which is basically any movement that resists extending the lower back. This exercise uses all of your abdominals, as well as glutes, legs, arms, and shoulders, doesn’t it just sound magical?

In 2018 a study was conducted, where 30 people of both genders who had lower back pain (for more than two weeks) were asked to do 5 plank exercises every day for three weeks. The results have shown that a plank not only strengthens various muscle groups, but also reduces back pain and improves the quality of life.

The key to the perfect plank is keeping your hips in line with the rest of your body, don’t stick your bum in the air and equally don’t let it fall towards the floor making an arch in your back…easier said than done! It is crucial to focus on doing the plank correctly, otherwise you might hurt some muscles, or even worse – suffer for no result!

The best way to start is from kneeling, come onto your forearms with your palms flat on the floor, next you need to activate your thigh muscles to straighten your legs. If you really push your elbows into the floor, then your shoulder blades will open up. Next tuck your tailbone, squeeze your glues and draw your stomach in, try pulling your feet towards your elbows and vice versa. Now for the hard part…hold it!

If you’re not used to it, then try holding for 30 seconds and repeat 3 times. As you get used to holding the plank position, try and extend how long you’re holding it for. See if you can work up to 2.5 minutes and again, repeat 3 times.

As plank activates all your muscled it might be a good idea to do it in the very beginning of your workout as a mini warm up (it does not substitute a proper warm up). Next time you roll your yoga mat out to exercise start with a series of planks switching from the regular elbow plank to the side ones.

If you stick to the instructions and do it often enough, there’s a chance you will love this exercise at some point. Good luck! You can do it!

NUTRITION HACKS FOR BETTER PERIODS

By | Food for thought, Health, Nutrition | No Comments

“That time of the month” doesn’t need to mean bloating, mood swings or painful cramps. Avoid period fatigue with these nutrition tweaks and you could be on your way to downgrading or eliminating symptoms all together!

UP THOSE OMEGA 3’s
Good fats, like Omega 3’s, are a dream at helping your body reduce inflammation which is key in reducing cramping. High-quality fats are exactly what your body needs to balance hormones and they even help clear skin. Look to add avocados, olive oil and grass-fed butter to your diet. They are great to sneak into your smoothies and salads – you’ll barely notice.

SAY BYE BYE TO PROCESSED FOOD
Eating whole foods is brilliant for your body and its functions. Your body is intelligent, when you put an apple into it or lean chicken, it knows what to do with it.
Go and check your pantry now, pick up a food that has a label on it. Read the list of the ingredients – if there are ingredients you can’t pronounce, then it stands to reason that your body won’t know how to digest them either!

EAT THE RAINBOW
Increase your consumption of fruits and vegetables. When you get playful and try and eat every color of the rainbow you soon find you have added additional fiber, vitamins and minerals without even trying. With a special shout out to phytonutrients which only exist in plant based food. They talk directly to our cells, helping increase immunity and decrease inflammation.

GET PICKY WITH YOUR PROTEINS.
It’s very simple when you think about it. Our bodies produce our own hormones and then balance them in line with our cycle. If we start to add new hormones – from factory farmed meat – we give our body new work to do and evolution hasn’t yet taught us how to do this and maintain a pain free period.
Buying organic grass fed meat (and where possible keep it local) takes this stress off of our bodies so it can focus on what it does best. Many people have noted that reduced meat consumption provides a more comfortable flow.

FACE LIFTING – BETTER THAN ANY CREAM

By | Beauty, Fashion, Health | One Comment

Why do we believe expensive creams can help our face look younger, and yet exercise to do the same thing for our body? There are 43 muscles in the face, but we only use 30 percent of them. Can it be beneficial to work with them as well?

A throughout massage of the face and daily exercises can lift and smoothen your face better than any cream or serum. We are not telling you to throw away all the beauty products you own. But the next time you stand in front of the mirror, consider massaging your face for a couple of minutes, and you’ll see the results as soon as you do it!

Why exercise?

Let’s take the “abs” for example. In our everyday life there are not so many occasions when these muscles are really working. And yet every single person is willing to die in the gym for a six-pack.

The same happens with our facial muscles. Daily we are using just a little portion of them while chewing, smiling, talking etc. But if we were to spend at least 15 minutes a day on facial exercises, there would be no more complaints of saggy necks, jowls or puffy eyes.

Manual lifting

Manual lifting is another technique to make your face look younger and skin smoother. Done on your own or with the help of a professional, this massage prevents aging, aids lymphatic system and drains excess water from the face.

After just a couple of minutes of rubbing and stroking, you can already feel your face become slimmer and cheekbones more visible. Isn’t it a dream come true?!

Don’t make it worse

Both these procedures, however, need to be done with caution. It is very important not to do any harm or make it look even worse. We recommend consulting with a professional before starting these exercises or massages on your own.

Our providers are always there to help. For example, try out the facial toning with Nadia ONLINE. In just 30 minutes she’ll teach you all the basics of facial exercises which you can easily perform on your own, or even at the elevator, in the car or walking down the street.

(Nadia is also teaching yoga in Zug. To access her online yoga and facial toning lessons, dial 6300 Postcode on our website)

When it comes to manual lifting, both Caterina and Eleftheria are offering 1 hour long facial massages in Zurich Lake and Zug regions. These qualified masters will follow all the essential lines on the face and reactivate the muscles so that the skin becomes smoother and gains elasticity.
